WHAT DO WE DO

AND WHO DO WE WORK WITH?

We understand that neurodivergent children present with a range of differences in their communication and learning profile. Our therapy focuses on identifying where there is a genuine need for a child, and never on how to ‘fix’, ‘cure’ or minimise autism. We celebrate neurodiversity and value a child’s communication at whatever stage it is at. We want to empower neurodivergent children and their families to achieve their communication potential.

DIFFERENCES NOT DEFICITS

GESTALT LANGUAGE PROCESSING

Destination: Communication specialises in working with young non-speaking or minimally-speaking neurodivergent children. Many of the children we work with are Gestalt Language Processors (GLPs) and I have undertaken specialist training and research in to supporting children developing language in this way.

TESTIMONIAL

Alice has been working with our five year old son Thomas, in his school setting. She has built up a wonderful bond with him and has really grasped his character and special interests.  Alice has been instrumental in helping his 1/1 and other care givers at school, in adapting, to open up the best way to try and communicate and encourage language from Thomas. Alice has blown me away with her enthusiasm, dedication and willingness to go the extra mile to help our son.

TESTIMONIAL

Alice has been working with my son who is 4 years old. He has autism and is non-verbal. Alice gave some helpful feedback and suggestions following an assessment and has since been working with my son's nursery worker to put in place strategies to help my son improve his communication. It is clear to me that Alice is a very knowledgeable and professional speech and language therapist. She is warm, friendly, enthusiastic and approachable helping my son to engage with her.

WHAT WE ABSOLUTELY DO

  • Use Appreciative Inquiry to identify communication strengths.

  • Respect your child's differences.

  • Use a child-led, play based approach.

  • Introduce Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) as part of therapy.

  • Prioritise building connection, trust and confidence whilst growing your child's speech, language and communication toolkit.

WHAT WE WON’T DO

  • Consider neurodivergence a ‘problem’ to be ‘fixed’.

  • Focus only on developing spoken language.

  • Use therapy approaches based in compliance  (e.g. ABA techniques).

  • Use deficit-focused or derogatory language when describing a child.
